Kialo Edu
Kialo Edu is an e-learning platform with a clear mission: to help students think critically.
The team behind Kialo includes developers, programmers, and copywriters, who work hard to release a product that is always accessible and constantly updated. Their ongoing dialogue with teachers and educators is key to ensuring that the platform truly addresses their users' needs and goals. For this reason, Kialo decided to adopt a new look that reflects both how the company has grown since its foundation in 2011 and their investment in the Edtech ecosystem.

A new visual language for Kialo Edu
To form a strong narrative, I created a new set of characters and illustrations that demonstrate how students and educators could interact with Kialo Edu’s discussion platform and show – in an intuitive way – the core functionality of the new features.
All my work for Kialo Edu was focused on creating a new language for their brand, which since inception had been shifting its focus in the highly competitive edtech market (whilst gradually closing down their platform for public discussion, Kialo).
The Project. The Story.
The Protagonists
Founded in 2011, Kialo aimed to provide a more satisfying alternative to the often negative and isolating nature of online discussions.
In 2019 they created Kialo Edu, an e-learning platform designed to teach students the skills of logical, self-reflective, and civil discourse.
Kialo Edu has since grown, developing new features and a clearer mission that was not adequately represented by their existing brand.
The Plot
I was hired by Kialo to re-design their brand and new features, so Kialo Edu would look more approachable, pleasant, and user-friendly.
When I joined the company, very little was in place in terms of branding. Although the platform itself was well-developed and appreciated by educators worldwide, the rest of the brand did not reflect the organisation's significant investment in creating something unique, free, and intuitive for teachers and their students.
It was a missed opportunity, especially in a market where more and more platforms are trying to approach their target audience with a strong brand presence and memorable visuals.
By analysing the existing touchpoints, I began by re-designing all of their auxiliary communication platforms, particularly the release notes that detailed new features and taking care of the of the design of the new blog, which contained educational articles.
These were important touchpoints that Kialo Edu current users were often in contact with, beyond the platform itself.
For the redesign of these two websites, I initially worked with the current colour palette and existing typography choice. I expanded both, in a way that would help me develop a new visual language that felt modern and dynamic.
My daily work with Kialo also involved the re-design of the experience and interface of some important new features. This included improving the grading system, a feature highly requested by educators to assess their students, and the new page for the templates. Through consulting educators for real case studies, our talented team tested, explored, and improved different core features to ensure that the discussion platform (Kialo Edu’s main product) was high-performing and up to the teachers' work in classroom/programs, as well as assimilating their needs and requests.
The brand needed to stand out and instil credibility: not only online but also when appearing in public, such as tech conferences and academy talks, with the hope of expanding its consumer base.
I continue to collaborate with a team of skilled copywriters in establishing the tone of voice for all new materials, including images for articles, video tutorials, and the new website. Additionally, I oversee the creation of fun and cheerful Kialo Edu merchandise, such as stickers, pins, t-shirts, sweaters, bags, and mugs. These items not only feature the Kialo Edu logo and iconic sunburst (as internally named), but they also convey the brand’s mission in an engaging and meaningful way.
The Results
The new branding of Kialo Edu took 15 months to be created and was released in June 2024.
The branding represents a new era for the organisation as it seeks to explore new frontiers in the edtech industry. The new brand helps Kialo to maintain its competitiveness with other e-learning platforms.
The brand now reflects its evergreen investment in quality and functionality, as well as having created an aesthetically pleasing platform for students and a functional, up-to-date platform for their teachers.
In the modern competitive market that has seen AI forcefully entering the edtech industry, Kialo Edu stands out not only as a trustworthy brand but also as an empathetic, playful, and intuitive option for those who want to learn how to think critically.
