The Project. The Story.

The Protagonists

Based in Horten, Norway, Barnas Språksenter is one of the country’s most renowned institutes, led by Line Avers, a logopedic therapist known for her empathy and dedication.

Line expressed her wish to create a space where young people feel comfortable and want to return, and where their parents feel welcome.

The Plot

During our first meeting, Line explained her method, and the different tools used to help children develop speech clarity.

In particular, she showed me the colourful tools used to help children with feeding and speech therapy.

These tools were the main inspiration for the illustrations that now adorn the new centre's offices and practice rooms.

The centre is situated on the ground floor of a uniform building in which corporate professions (lawyers, accountants, etc.) also have offices.

However, the first impression for children and parents needed to be welcoming and encouraging, despite the bland look of the building.

With this objective firmly in mind, I divided the space into four sections: exterior, interior, public, and private. Within this matrix, I started to think about which values, colours, and design elements I wanted to add.

My work started from the dual public-interior, decorating the entrance wall, the waiting room, and the back windows of the building.

The illustrations introduce the different tools used by Lene, in an imaginary environment with hidden creatures and tropical flowers.

The illustrations promote both the therapists' commitment and the acceptance of diversity (represented by the characters in the waiting room).

Then, my attention moved to the private-interior and public-exterior sides of the matrix.

So, I created a friendly ‘conversation’ between the outside windows (public) and the interior glasses of the rooms (private).

For the illustrations, I dedicated each practice room to a specific TalkTooks kit, connected to imaginary worlds on earth, in the sky, and into the sea.

The outside windows show different children playing with the speech tools (straw, horn and bubble kit). At the same time, the inside glasses fully represent these parallel worlds with animals, plants, and other decorative elements, as they emerge from each child's individual tools and imagination.

The Result

Today, the colourful illustrations of the new centre welcome children and their parents to a parallel world, in which hope and transformation can happen!

By crossing the centre's main door, Line now feels more than ever that through her work, children can desire and visualise a better life, while parents can aspire to the well-rounded growth they are seeking for them.

The client says:

I have never thought that after 20 years of my career, I would have the centre I always dreamt of!
